Something that may be noticed after a lot of snow and moisture fall on our roadways is an abundance of potholes. Some may wonder why this happens? After a snow or rain event, water will seep beneath the pavement through cracks due to natural wear and tear from traffic. When the temperatures drop to the point of freezing, that water under the pavement becomes ice and expands below the pavement surface. This freezing will then force the pavement to heave and rise. As traffic continues to go over the raised section and the temperatures begin to rise above freezing- divot may occur under the surface and the pavement breaks, forming a pothole
