K-9 Unit
A Great Partnership
Blaine Police Canine Yoschi and his handler, Officer Michael Munden have several outstanding accomplishments, and we are very proud of their work. Mike and Yoschi were the first canine team in Whatcom County to be cross-trained for both patrol/tracking AND illegal drug interdiction. They are excellent at both.
Officer Munden attained his Master Canine Handler certification in 2004, a designation rarely awarded to such a young team. Yoschi was the first police dog in Whatcom County whose work resulted in a search warrant based almost entirely upon the tracking of a suspect. (In that crime a man fired rifle rounds into an occupied auto, nearly killing a six-year-old child. He was arrested and faces a lengthy prison term.)
When not on patrol, Yoschi and Mike provide demonstrations to civic groups and schools, and train with with canine team county-wide.
Donations
Since the inception of the program, our K-9 division has operated entirely on donations from the community. The K-9 Team is an integral part of our regular patrol force, and works continuously to remove illegal drugs from our streets while protecting our residents and police officers. Our K-9 Program provides an invaluable service to our community, and this program would not exist if not for the generous support of our citizens.
